Current research of Prof Pang in molecular genomics of eye diseases include glaucoma, vitreoretinal diseases, myopia, thyroid eye disease, and retinoblastoma. He also studies green tea catechins and GHRHR antagonists in ocular oxidative stress, inflammation, and degeneration. He advocates the concept of “health care through children eye care”.
Prof Pang serves as expert reviewer, examiner and honorary/visiting professor of >60 research funding organisations and high academic institutions worldwide, including the Wellcome Trust, European Research Council, NEI, ARVO, NMRC Singapore, NSF China, Changjiang Scholar Program China. In 2026 he was selected ARVO Regional Council Asia. He has been the convener of the Visual Sciences program of >20 international congresses. He received the 2016 China State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (SSTPA), Special Achievement Award of Chinese Ophthalmological Society 2017, APAO Senior Achievement Award 2018 and Outstanding Service in Prevention of Blindness Award 2022. He was the 2020 ARVO Foundation honoree. He was among the World’s Top 2% Scientists in Ophthalmology & Optometry (Stanford University & Elsevier) 2023. In 2025, he was elected Top 100 Most Influential Ophthalmologists and Visual Scientists in the Asia-Pacific Region by APAO.
